The process of converting microfiche and microfilm is not a process that you
want to bring in-house because you happen to require it for a project. It
is not a simple "walk up to a machine and push a button process". There are
multiple vendors that sell equipment for conversion, but they are expensive
and take extensive training to operate PROPERLY to get a quality product.
One has to take into consideration various things prior to performing the
conversion process. Examples, but not all inclusive examples are:
1. are you converting microfilm or microfiche?
2. if microfilm
a. if so, were originals filmed in simplex or duplex format?
3. if microfiche
a. is it 1) step & repeat fiche; 2) is it computer generated fiche, 3) is
it
jacketed fiche?
b. what is the spacing between frames like and will it require extensive
manual
processing?
c. what information should I captured from the title of the fiche?
d. are the frames bracket and identified by Row and Column ID?
e. is it important that I capture that various potential traits of the
fiche?
processing or set up to convert?
4. what is the physical condition of the film/fiche: 1) has been stored
properly;
2) does it have water damage; 3) has it deteriorated; 4) will it require
any
special handling to process?
5. what type of product are you working with 1) original silver; 2) diazo
duplicate; 3) ammonia duplicate?
6. What reduction ratio was used in the creation of the film or fiche?
7. are there only positive images, negative images or both on the media?
8. does the contrast, density, etc. vary across the media or is it
consistent?
9. does it require despeckeling?
The above are just a few of the things you need to consider. My advice to
most clients and vendors is, do not attempt this yourself unless you want to
spend the money and time to get the proper equipment to handle any type of
film/fiche you might run into and are willing to either hire or train
personnel that can devote their time to the projects each and every time.
You are most often better off, selecting a vendor that can handle it
properly, efficiently and at reasonable pricing for you.
We have extensive experience regarding conversion of microfilm/microfiche
and you have to commit the time and effort to do it correctly.

Laura,
There are a number of hardware options available in the marketplace that
convert fische to tiff/pdf/jpeg etc. The hardware is not cheap but it is
effective. Talk to your local scanning/photocopier sales rep. he/she
should have an idea of the hardware you require. I deal with Canon here
in Australia and they have a few devices that assist.
Cheers from down under,

Any

would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
