George,
I am not attending Legal Tech either, so I'd also like to receive any
minutes/reports your group comes up with in New York. Maybe you could
post here a link on your web site when you get back.
I have read with interest the comments of others here on certification,
and I was a little surprised by some of them. The point I, at least, was
trying to make was the need to define a model curriculum and promote it
to colleges and universities. A two-year certificate or four-year degree
in Litigation Support Science or Computer Forensics (most likely two
separate programs) would be no guarantee of excellence (what degree
is?), but each would provide a focal point for minimum standards and
best practices. If the curriculum chose ISO standards or centered on
certain industry-accepted software (the way engineering schools tend to
favor certain CAD programs, for example), fine. My idea is to solicit
input from all resources, including vendors, but make the program as
objective and independent as possible. The purpose would be not only to
identify minimum standards of competence but also to teach and test for
them. An academic setting or settings, in my mind, would be the most
credible and efficient way to go. Tom O'Connor informs me he has been
working along this path for some time now, so I won't steal his thunder
on the subject. I like the sound of what he has been doing and hope he
will let us all hear from him when he is prepared to do so.

George,
I am not able to get up to Legal Tech, could I suggest that any
decisions/suggestions be minuted and subsequently made available to
group
members?

George:
We have a suite at the Hilton that could accommodate ten or fifteen
people
on Tuesday morning at 9am for this discussion. I just landed in NY and
haven't caught up to see if there is a place nominated, but if not, feel
free to suggest room 3407 at the Hilton. AsB
