Try the medical school librarians at local medical schools, and if there is medication you are aware of that is able to help check with the drug companies. It will probably be faster than looking through legal specific resources.

I have a matter that needs a pre-created video "tutorial" or medical
educational piece that will showcase what Accute Coronary Thrombosis
is for demonstration at trial. The time constraints do not allow us
to have an animated simulation created as a demonstrative. This video
would have to have a basic precreated representation of what occurs
during Accute Coronary Thrombosis. Any leads on a video provider of
this kind would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Matt Jordan

I need to hear from FM vendors re their interest in, and the approximate cost of, providing imaging / ocr / pdf conversion services. Two main categories of work are (1) large case-related document productions for litigation support and (2) scanning of incoming paper arriving by US mail or courier -- correspondence, pleadings, etc., for routing into document management system.

Location: San Francisco (Financial District).

Approximate volume: 500,000 - 750,000 pages per year.

Please call or reply off the list for further details. ASAP. Don't leave this until after the holiday weekend.

Does anyone have experience dealing with scanning or coding in any of
the Eastern European countries? I'm looking for recommendations for
software and hardware that can be used there and coding facilities
that can deal with documents written in English.

Pat *

Darium makes a board called the MPEGator * we have 4 of them. They have
been easy to install and operate. MPEG1 sacrifices picture quality for
storage capacity * but then again, depositions aren't exactly riveting
entertainment. Try visiblelight.com * they have all the products and very
knowledgeable folks.

Good luck.

Subject: Re: Mpeg encoding station

Pat,

Here are a list of encoding boards I have come across and worked with:

1. Broadway MPEG1/AVI Encoder
Quality = Adequate
Pricing = Excellent (Under $1K)
Formats = MPEG1 & AVI
Problems Encountered = Does not have in-line audio input. It requires you to do all your audio captures via your sound board. Although it does come with calibration tools, on occasion, the audio and video desynchronize.

2. MPEGator (Gator Board) MPEG1 Encoder
Quality = Excellent
Pricing = Adequate (Last time checked +/- $1200)
Formats = MPEG1/?
Problems Encountered = I have not worked in depth with this encoder. Maybe someone else could fill in this part.

3. Canopus Amber MPEG1/MPEG2 Encoder
Quality = Excellent
Pricing = High
Formats = MPEG1/MPEG2
Problems Encountered = No scan line screens

I personally prefer the Amber Board. It is extremely reliable, but expensive. If you are looking to do MPEG2 for DVD in the future, then Amber is the way to go. There are several other boards out there that can accomplish the same tasks as the ones I listed. However I caution you to stay away from the low-end encoders. Snappy, ATI, etc. Although they are adequate for home usage, they just don't have the quality needed to present video at trial. I hope this helps.

Subject: [litsupport] FW: [AdvancedLitigation] Presentation software

Laura:

I've read your question, along with some of the responses from others. We
use both TrialDirector and Sanction here at InfoGraphics. Each has it's
appropriate uses - none of these products is perfect (or even vaguely
close!). Sanction is MUCH easier to use, much easier to learn and is leading
the way toward open standards in synchronization.

In fact, LiveNote is working with Verdict Systems and has said that within
the next 2 months, their service bureaus will be able to synchronize for
Sanction as well. I don't know if they will create an addition to Sanction
to read the encrypted LiveNote timecode (thus keeping LiveNote
synchronization proprietary), or simply eliminate their encryption as an
option. Either way, Sanction's non-proprietary synchronization seems to be
impacting the marketplace.

Back to the product itself:
Whenever we have a client who wishes to run their own presentation in court,
we suggest Sanction as a possible choice, especially if they don't have a
lot of experience. Trial Director is simply too difficult to learn in a
reasonable time & even after you learn it, it's a real bear to use! However,
most of our staff still prefers TrialDirector for their own use in court.
There are some critical capabilities that only TrialDirector has, at the
moment (some of which it only just acquired).

1. Dual Screen: This is, by far, the best way to present in court -
offering a level of control and coordination that is too difficult with a
single monitor.

2. "Closed Caption" style on-screen transcript (latest release of
TrialDirector): Although Sanction offers this as well, for now Sanction's is
limited to one line of rolling transcript at a time (they've promised a
preference setting of 1-9 lines in future). We always recommend this style
of viewing on-screen transcript (if at all) over the traditional 1/2-screen
transcript, 1/4-screen video. The small video size in the latter approach
defeats the whole purpose of showing VIDEO deposition!

3. Related to 2 (above), only TrialDirector allows us to keep the audio
track playing while we eliminate the on-screen video. We use this to create
a script wherein the court views documents, on-screen, as the video witness
reads or otherwise refers to them. We can thus follow along with the
testimony, always cutting back to the witness on-screen at critical moments.

4. Unlike Sanction, TrialDirector allows us to create modified versions
(highlights, etc.) of documents in the system, INCLUDING ZOOMS & BLOWOUTS.

Don't misunderstand, TrialDirector is a VERY capable product but we still
don't like it. Sanction utilizes rational file-naming and easy & intuitive
organization. TrialDirector, on the other hand, DOES NOT. One day, someone
will put together a highly capable AND rational program for use in court.

By the way, we are still evaluating another program called ReViewer from
Visionary Information Systems. So far, it seems somewhere between the other
two. I'll let you know after we've completed our evaluation.

If anyone knows of any other viable alternatives, we at InfoGraphics would
be very interested to hear about them.

Subject: Need Imaging FM quote

I need to hear from FM vendors re their interest in, and the approximate
cost of, providing imaging / ocr / pdf conversion services. Two main
categories of work are (1) large case-related document productions for
litigation support and (2) scanning of incoming paper arriving by US mail or
courier -- correspondence, pleadings, etc., for routing into document
management system.
Location: San Francisco (Financial District).
Approximate volume: 500,000 * 750,000 pages per year.
Please call or reply off the list for further details. ASAP. Don't leave
this until after the holiday weekend.

I'm a little concerned about the quality of the information on this list if
it becomes a place to post requests for quotes. If all 800 or so of us start
putting RFQs here, then the focus of the list has shifted from what I
understood its original intent is. I realize that requesting bid information
via e-mail is efficient, but I think it needs to be more private. Asking for
members' suggestions about companies that might do a certain task seems
appropriate, but then to me, any follow-up should be private.

My two cents worth anyway. Wait, I'm a consultant. It's probably more like
$2 worth, right? <G>

Have a great weekend everyone.

We are in the process of creating a specialized thesaurus for one of our litigation groups. I was just curious if others have undertaken this sort of project before, what if any problems you ran into, and most importantly, was it worth the effort - do people use it?

Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Here's a good resource for locating extensions. If the extension you are
looking for is not on the list, you can post a message on the bulletin board
for further assistance.

Sherri

I see you have an answer for the first two file types. The .fmt file is a
format file which was used with the DOS versions of Lotus 123 to enhance
graphics. It worked as a WYSIWYG overlay.

Cheers
Greg

Sherri,

I believe that the PST format belongs to Microsoft Outlook. AKA Personal File Folder. It is used for import/export of folders including: Email (IN/OUT BOXES), Contact Listings, Calendar, etc. etc. I am not sure if other applications share this file format or not.
