Subject: [litsupport] Browser-Based Lit Supp Product
Is anyone selling a web-browser-based litigation support application that
can be implemented on a firm's Intranet?
If I could take the server-side databases and programming from
casecentral.com or lextranet.com (or any of the others out there), and
implement it in-house at a reasonable cost per user for all my firm's cases
(not just those that are large enough to justify a repository's cost), I
would be quite pleased.
There are countless reasons for an in-house thin client solution, but I
won't list them because I'm sure many of you already know what they are.
I have developed web-interfaces for databases and imaging using COM, ODBC,
IIS, ASP, Domino, etc., at previous firms, but it was a "lotta damn work"
(known as my catch-phrase at Latham & Watkins in DC). If someone has
already developed something AND is willing to sell it as an onsite
installation, there's no reason for me to re-invent the wheel at my new
firm.
I've been waiting for such a product since 1996. If there still isn't
anyone doing this, I might quit this job, get some programmers from this
list, develop just such a solution, and make a lot of money (hint, hint).

Subject: Anix PowerPoint Add-On
Good Day, All -- Has anyone on this list had experience with the Anix
PowerPoint Add-on (through Doar Communications)? I understand it handles
some of the presentation tasks that one finds in trial presentation
software. I wonder how well it performs compared to some of the trial
presentation products out there, because I suspect that's the question my
clients will be asking.
Thank you in advance for your comments.

Subject: Copy vendors v. LitSupport vendors
It seems that many Legal copy vendors are starting to get involved in
the scanning/coding business, and I'm curious as to whether people
have any general opinions as to the advantages of one over the other.
My experience seems to have been that traditional LitSupport vendors
are better at quality control, but that copy vendors seem to have a
better handle on the 'urgency' of legal work.
It seems like I am developing a rule of thumb that if I am having
scanning and coding done as part of a production, with all the
deadlines that entails, I am better off going to a copyshop that now
does scanning and coding - mainly because of their responsiveness to
urgent deadlines. If on the other hand I have a large collection of
paper already bates labelled and produced, with less pressing
deadlines, traditional LitSupport vendors are a better bet.
I'd love to hear what opinions other people have formed, with of
course the pre-stated understanding that sweeping statements can
ignore exceptions to the rule.
Thanks,

LiveNote is about to announce a strategic development relationship with
CaseMap.
Already CaseMap has a link back to a LiveNote transcript. The next
generation
of LiveNote products (Version 8.0) will be developed to include 2 way links
(ie
CaseMap will be launched from anywhere within a LiveNote transcript or
report as
well as vice versa). Further, the next version of LiveNote will have WAN
capability with remote synchronization being high on the agenda!
LiveNote's strategy going forward will be to stay open and non proprietory
and
to provide slick integration with all products that law firms/lawyers use in
other areas of litigation support. Other companies that LiveNote has
recently
established relationships with include Steelpoint's Introspect product,
UR/Law
from Merrill Corporation and our VideoNote product is being developed to be
compatible with Sanction trial presentation software (it being already
compatible with TrialPro). We also have a longstanding relationship with
Concordance and again V.8 will have far greater integration with the
Concordance
d-base software.
Anyone wishing any further detailed information on LiveNote's on-going
development strategy can send me an e-mail and I would be glad to respond.

CaseMap is a great tool for organizing your facts and case information. One
of the key benefits of the product is the ability to quickly create a case

LiveNote is about to announce a strategic development relationship with
CaseMap.
Already CaseMap has a link back to a LiveNote transcript. The next
generation
of LiveNote products (Version 8.0) will be developed to include 2 way links
(ie
CaseMap will be launched from anywhere within a LiveNote transcript as well
as
vice versa). Further, the next version of LiveNote will have WAN capability
with synchronization being high on the agenda!
LiveNote's strategy going forward will be to stay open and non proprietory
and
provide slick integration with all products that law firms/lawyers use in
other
areas of litigation support. Other companies that LiveNote has recently
established relationships with include Steelpoint's Introspect product,
UR/Law
from Merrill Corporation and Sanction trial presentation software.
Anyone wishing any further detailed information on LiveNote's on-going
development strategy can send me an e-mail and I would be glad to respond.

Our firm is using CaseMap and have been very impressed with the product.
CaseMap is a great tool for organizing your facts and case information. One
of the key benefits of the product is the ability to quickly create a case
and begin entering key information (facts, issues, etc.). Also, another key
feature is the ability to synchronize case information that has been entered
offsite. Our firm will use CaseMap in conjunction with other Litigation
Support products.
Good luck.

Subject: Re: Copy vendors v. LitSupport vendors
I would say your opinion is pretty close to how it is. I'm working at a
litigation imaging service bureau that was created from the success of our
copy centers. The line that separates the litigation support vendors and
copy
vendors is getting smaller and could someday be gone. Litigation Support
venders have a tighter quality, I feel, do to having the right kinds of
people working for them. But Copy venders that have moved into that realm of
doing imaging for litigation are now paying more attention to quality. By
acquiring people from litigation support services, and paralegal with coding
background, vendors understanding improves, which in turn improves quality.
Copy operators that now become scan operators, make the transition easy and
can still carry methods of efficiency to turn around projects quickly. In my
experience there are more and more copy centers raising quality standards.
We
have LANs that give us the ability to do a real page by page QC, and QC
coded
materiel with a turnaround only a little longer than copying. Like most
service bureaus that have raised there quality standards have done. For
right
now I think overall the quality is going to be at its highest with a
Litigation Support Service, and turnaround time will still be the quickest
with Copy vendors. I've talked to one copy vendor, while having overflow we
needed to get done, and heard, "so what is Summation, Concordance, IPro,
Introspect, Judicata, JFS, and so on?" Luckily I haven't run into that
problem a lot, but it has happened. Mostly the problems are with document
breaks, and coded information. Now I'm not speaking of all Copy vendors,
there are those of use out there that do pay attention to quality, but one
should choose there vendor wisely. If I do have a certain amount of coding I
need done, if I'm a little short staffed, and the deadline is flexible, I'll
send it to a Litigation Support vendor for reasons of quality.
