With all the talk recently about Perl, Awk, etc., I want to put in a plug for good old CPL. Long after Concordance review databases go away, I'll keep one copy of Concordance around just to use CPL for file processing. Last night I used all four pieces of my essential toolkit:

Excel for replacement within columns
Textpad for regex replacement and sort/dedup
Access for joins
CPL to roll up values from sequential rows

Not the most elegant solution in the world, but reasonably quick. And since it's good to know CPL anyway to manipulate Concordance databases, you don't need to learn yet another tool for the rest of your file processing needs.
