I followed this topic with some interest. I use commercial software and also write my own code when useful. In the past, I've written some Perl to perform general email conversion including, but not limited to, the following:

(1) Convert EDRM XML to MIME

(2) Convert MIME to Concordance and Opticon (including image creation using PDF and/or TIFF)

(3) Convert Concordance to MIME

I've thought about cleaning up and open sourcing some of this code but didn't know how much interest there is in Perl from the lit support community, vs. say Oracle and VMware which use Perl quite a bit. Would there be interest in open sourcing some of this code?

John Wang,

I would be interested in component (1), above, of your code. I am not
certain that I would have any use for it currently, but would certainly
like to read it. I suspect that components (2) and (3) would be of
greater interest to Litigation Support professionals than to EDD and
digital forensic professionals. Heck, who knows, your Perl code might be
good enough to impel Calvin Smith, Robert Simpson, and Joshua Headley to
begin using OSS Perl in order to complete their Lit Support tasks.

Do you have any plans to write code that will convert from MIME to EDRM
XML? That could be very useful, especially for someone who wanted to put
email into an XML database.

There are many, OSS Perl modules for processing email on CPAN.org. I am
curious as to whether your code uses any of these modules -- or did you
write everything from scratch?

If you decide to release the Perl source code, then you could release
it on CPAN.org as well as on, say, SourceForge.net or FreshMeat.net.

Finally, I prefer OSS that is released under a non-restrictive OSS
license, such as the Apache license, rather than the GPL, which is
highly restrictive. See the Apache Software Foundation for the Apache
license.

Sincerely,
Paul Bain, Esq.
