I have a huge DVD mpg file that was taken on a walk-around of a
construction site. Can anyone suggest a decent software program that
will let me make/extract video clips from selected portions of the large
.mpg file? It would also help if it could be saved in various formats,
as the expert witnesses all use different software.
Thanks,

Moderator,
APS Document Management Group is one of a number of affiliates that
combined to form Civil Action Group. Seems we have a bit of self promotion.

How are all of you handling the management of workflow? We are
currently a staff of 3, but will be a staff of 6 in the next couple of
weeks. With our staff of 3, typically, attorneys and paralegals just
call, email or personally pay a visit to whichever one of us is
available (or their favorite) and ask for assistance with a
project/matter. The person taking the request then ends up "owning"
that project and the rest of us don't always know what the others are
working on. So nothing is centralized. Do any of you have one point of
contact person that all projects go to or even an email inbox for
incoming projects that gets periodically monitored by someone? Do you
then assign each project to a specific person depending on their skill
level or availability? Do you keep track of all this and if so, what
are you using to do that?
Any information you have is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you have a copy of Sanction, you can do it and then export the clips
as smaller .mpgs. If you're looking for something more heavy duty, I'm
a big fan of Adobe Premiere.

Alex,
One of my favorites is Sony Vegas. It edits and converts video into a
variety of formats. Vegas is moderately priced and can be found on the
web. Another good video editor is "Myflix". It is a good cheap digital
video editor.
Try those. If you need more choices feel free to contact me.

Subject: [litsupport] Video editing software question.
I have a huge DVD mpg file that was taken on a walk-around of a
construction site. Can anyone suggest a decent software program that
will let me make/extract video clips from selected portions of the large
.mpg file? It would also help if it could be saved in various formats,
as the expert witnesses all use different software.
Thanks,
Alex F. Buiel II

Alex:
I have used Pinnacle video editing software from www.pinnaclesys.com for a
long time. I use it primarily for home use with my family home video
transfers. I did use it once to slice and dice a re-enactment of a crime
that was shot with an amateur video camera. I had to extract stills which
it did easily enough. It will do what you want to do and it's relatively cheap.
A word of warning though...you need really big iron to run this stuff. Just
the basic recommendations in the software say 1GB of RAM is recommended.
The more the merrier, especially with large files. Fast processor and fast
drives too. Sometimes it just grinds away.
It can export out in a variety for formats and if you have the appropriate
hardware, to video tape if necessary.

Alex, (very sorry for the length of this but thought necessary)
Most of the video editing programs will accomplish your task, but there are some drawbacks. Once you spend hundreds for the software, then hardware and then learning how to be an editor, you encounter a very significant drawback. Re-encoding. Once you created your edited version, you need to output it for distribution. This is where the software program encodes your edited version into a new self contained video file, which can then be a MPG, AVI, Quicktime, etc. The length of your edited video, the power of your computer and the video format to which you are converting to, are directly related to how long it will take to encode. When you start messing with data rates and system crashes, you will probably end up spending much, much more time on this project than you ever envisioned. |
