Can anyone share an experience with Applied Discovery where they have had to pull a project from them to have it completed by another vendor?

Due to the nature of this question, feel free to respond to me directly at the following e-mail address: lawfirmlit(at)yahoo(.)com.

While DVD are certainly a viable method, I believe the jury is still out
on their long term longevity. If anyone will remember when CD were
becoming popular we first thought that they too would last many decades
and we are now finding that in certain circumstances CD media 10+ years
old can and will fail.

Not to be contrarian to this thread, but I truly believe that unless a
medium has been designed to be archival in nature, it will not stand up.
Current CD/DVD writeable media is _not_ generally designed to be
archival. These media use organic dyes, and the plastic coating is
oxygen permeable. These things will die in a few years.

Hard drives? Forget it. They will not last at all, even if stored
correctly. Wake them up in a few years, and the internal lubrication has
turned to glue. This is less true for high-end SCSI drives, tho.

Tape is not only designed to be archival, but most tape backup hardware
and software have error correction built in to compensate for bad
blocks. I've also personally found that most tape is workable 10-20
years after the fact, if stored in even a remotely correct fashion. On
the other hand, you'll find that most older music CDs are significantly
degraded today - and those things used machine-stamped aluminum platters
encased in plastic. Guess what? They let in enough oxygen to darken to
the "bright" part of the platters, making them useless or very error
probe. Organic dyes won't fair as well as aluminum.

My suggestion: go with tape, especially a format that has a proven
forwards/backwards compatiblity track record and good market share. Use
a backup software/protocol that will absolutely be understood and
supported in 30 years - how about good old tar format? It has been in
use for almost 40 years so far, and no one owns the format.

That, or find optical media, like WORM media, that is designed to be
stable over time.
